Michigan Helps Medical Team

Helps makes all arrangements for team travel, lodging and food. In addition they provide local support in Guatemala with a permanent staff.
Cost: $2000 when departing with the team from Detroit. (Cost includes travel insurance, ground and air transportation, lodging, meals and medical supplies)
$1600 without airfare and travel insurance. Anyone arranging his or her own travel will be required to purchase travel insurance and provide proof of insurance with Helps.
Departure other than from Detroit: Helps will make air arrangements from areas other than Detroit and will charge those people the difference between the cost of their ticket and the price from Detroit.
Dates: 2011 trip will start on February 12, 2011 and return February 23rd, 2011.

Typical Itinerary: Saturday: Air Detroit to Guatemala City (Marriot Hotel, Guatemala City) Sunday: Bus ride from Guatemala City to Hospital, unpack supplies and set up hospital Monday – Friday: Patient Care Saturday: Pack Supplies Sunday: Bus from Hospital to Antigua, Guatemala Sunday – Tuesday: Lodging, Hotel Antigua for relaxation, sightseeing Wednesday: Air Guatemala City to Detroit

Scholarships: As money allows an attempt will be made to help those members unable to generate donations on their own. We encourage team members to seek donations.
Tax Implications: The cost of the trip is tax deductible (minus airfare) as a charitable donation. Helps International provides a letter acknowledging your donation for IRS purposes.
Packing List: All team members will be allowed to bring one piece of checked luggage and one carry-on item. The second piece of your allowable checked baggage for the flights will be used to transport bags of medical equipment, medicines, and other supplies that the team will need during our 12-day trip. Many team members chose to use a large duffel bag for their luggage. A list of recommended items to pack will be provided to you at a later date and will be discussed during our team meetings prior to departure.
Vaccinations: Required: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus Involved in Patient Care: Hepatitis B
Credentials: You will also need to furnish a valid US Passport and copies of your medical credentials and certifications to Helps International.
